WP 1: Project coordination and management

Lead beneficiary: AIDO

The principal objectives of this WP are to coordinate all activities of the consortium and to meet all legal, contractual, financial, technical and reporting requirements. It also includes work related to updating and managing the consortium agreement between the participants. To sum up, the objectives are to ensure the effective progress of work without complications and in accordance with the project plan on time and with the REA requirements and to ensure the good cooperation and communication between SVARNISH consortium and the Research Executive Agency (REA).

WP 2: Nanoclay modification

Lead beneficiary: MATRI

This work package is devoted to the selection of materials and modification of nanoclay to provide optimised barrier and antimicrobial properties. The modified nanoclays will be compatible with a solution of polymer preliminary components in a common solvent selected for the thermodynamic properties to ensure compatibility with the polymerisation and surface modification components and for inclusion in the final varnish formulation.

WP 3: Polymerisation, exfoliation and dispersion

Lead beneficiary: MATRI

The objective of this WP is to ensure that the nanoclay is homogeneously dispersed throughout the continuous phase of the dispersion in order to obtain the optimum barrier and antimicrobial properties of the varnish coating. Thus, compatibility of all the materials included in the dispersion is essential, as is the stability of the clay particles to agglomeration/aggregation and sedimentation. Discrete clay particles with adsorbed antimicrobial compounds will be achieved by in-situ polymerisation. The quality of the dispersion will be determined by analysis of the chemical and physical properties of the system.

WP 4: Varnish formulation for flexible packaging

Lead beneficiary: AIDO

During this WP, a varnish for flexography and gravure printing process to include the concentrate dispersion of polymer nanocomposites with antimicrobial properties will be designed. To cope with this objective, in a first 2 step a functional varnish with concentrate dispersion of polymer nanocomposites with antimicrobial properties will be obtained and then flexography and gravure printing samples will be produced. Therefore, the successful candidate must have good printability properties for being used in flexography and gravure technologies i.e. must have good physical-mechanical, barrier (oxygen, water vapour) and antimicrobial properties.

WP 5: Production and printing varnish using flexography and gravure printing technologies

Lead beneficiary: AIDO

During this WP, all the requirements involved in flexography and gravure printing process will be identified, and subsequently the best components and their condition will be selected. As a result, the optimal printing machine parameters will be established. Flexographic and gravure printing structures will be obtained, monolayer and duplex with good properties, improved physical-mechanical, barrier (oxygen and water vapour) and antimicrobial properties.

WP 6: Food safety and quality

Lead beneficiary: NOFIMA

The main objective of this WP is to evaluate the performance of the selected packaging systems regarding the antimicrobial effects and food quality. Then, an insight in the safety aspect of the food packaging material will be obtained.

WP 7: Prototype-food packaging: proof of concept testing

Lead beneficiary: NOFIMA

The objective of this WP is to evaluate the performance of the selected packaging system regarding the material properties, the antimicrobial effect and the food quality of the final concepts. This main objective can be divided in the following steps:

1. To obtain a final evaluation of monolayer and duplex packaging system for bakery product.

2. To identify potential food products which can be packaged with the new approach.

3. To obtain a final evaluation of packaging system for others identified food product.

WP 8: Dissemination & exploitation of project results

Lead beneficiary: AIDO

In this WP, the knowledge generated will be protected and well managed. A dissemination and exploitation plan of the results will be developed, to spread the technology transfer to the target and to the markets related. Diffusion activities will be contemplated to give the packaging innovations visibility into the “packaging market”.

The following steps will be carried out:

1. Protection of IPR: to organize and formulate all the results generated into a protectable form (with a patent application).

2. Dissemination of knowledge and benefits of the new product.

3. Exploitation of the results. To develop an exploitation strategy. Generate a business plan, to develop an attractive and compelling investment case to present both to capital investment institutions.
